To choose, you have to understand: financial education as a compass for the future
Why do we tend to leave our savings sitting in a current account? The most instinctive answer is: for security. Knowing the money is there, instantly available for any emergency, gives an immediate sense of control and peace of mind. It’s a human, understandable choice, but over the long run it can turn out to be an expensive illusion: inflation works quietly, eroding day after day the purchasing power of the capital left idle.
The real paradox is that banks have never offered more than they do today: cards, insurance policies, savings plans, pension funds, tailored investments. So the weak spot isn’t what’s on the shelves, but how clearly people can make sense of it: when, why and on what terms does this solution actually serve my life?
This is where financial education comes in: not as a megaphone to push a sale, but as a tool for building awareness, autonomy and peace of mind in everyday choices.
Invisible protection
The biggest gap lies in how we protect what we love. Data from ANIA, the Italian National Association of Insurance Companies, paint a surprising picture: in Italy only 6% of homes are covered by a policy against natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes, even though the country’s geography leaves much of its housing stock exposed to these events.
Why do we insure our smartphone without a second thought, yet leave our home uncovered?
Often it comes down to the belief that “it won’t happen to me”, a distrust of insurance jargon and the difficulty of understanding what a contract really covers.
Financial education shouldn’t play on fear or “sell security”. Instead, it should make the real-life trade-off visible: what happens to a household budget after an extreme event when there’s no safety net, and what changes when that risk has been planned for calmly? Turning a technical term like protection gap into a concrete scenario gives people the power to prevent rather than cure.
Not “invest more”, but “decide better”
The same dynamic applies to managed investments and retirement planning. The European Commission made the point forcefully in its Financial Literacy Strategy of 30 September 2025: citizens need accessible tools to manage their resources and build value over time.
The key message isn’t a simplistic “you should invest more”. If anything, it’s: learn to decide whether, how much and how.
Understanding the difference between ready cash, medium-term savings and a pension fund lets you answer four essential questions with a clear head:
- How much do I need close at hand to cover day-to-day spending and short-term emergencies?
- What share of my savings can work over longer horizons without keeping me up at night?
- What am I doing for my retirement, or am I just putting off a conversation I’ll have to have anyway?
- What is my real risk tolerance, given my life plans and my emotional stability?
A good learning path gives everyone the right lens to find their own way.
Building genuine relationships
There’s a reason many people are wary of financial education initiatives run by institutions: if every bite-sized tip ends in a promotional banner, people sense the commercial pressure straight away. Trust cracks and the chance for a real conversation disappears.
The alternative is a truly people-centred approach that reverses the order: listen first, then, if appropriate, make an offer.
Microlearning that lands and lasts
Help your people grow with bite-sized, gamified training. 30M+ learning actions across 500+ enterprises.
- Where are you on your financial literacy journey?
- What goals do you have in mind, beyond the numbers?
- What stage of life are you in today?
- What concerns or priorities are driving your current decisions?
This is where transparent profiling, built on consent and respect, really earns its place: it brings real-life needs to the surface, such as a child starting university, buying a first home, supporting an elderly parent or starting a new career.
For the financial institution, this approach translates into genuinely relevant offers; for the person on the other side, it means receiving support that has a practical, tangible impact on their daily life.
AWorld: making awareness an everyday habit
Closing the distance between abstract theory and lived experience takes a practical bridge. That’s why we developed Evolve, one of AWorld’s tools: an environment designed to turn financial learning into a continuous, engaging and accessible experience.
Through short modules and plain language, Evolve breaks down complex concepts such as diversification, returns, insurance cover and supplementary pensions. Thanks to interactive simulations, participants can get a hands-on feel for the future:
Dynamic quizzes, practical missions and gentle nudges turn passive knowledge into active skills. The goal is to sharpen decision-making and nurture mutual trust.
Trust is the best strategic advantage
For banks and insurers, investing in genuine financial education is neither a sunk cost nor a cosmetic line in the sustainability report. It’s a transformative lever that can:
- Raise awareness of saving, protection and planning;
- Improve the quality of conversations, making dialogue in branches and on digital channels more balanced and constructive;
- Create informed demand, grounded in a real understanding of needs rather than sales urgency;
- Build long-term loyalty, strengthening a relationship based on transparency and mutual benefit;
- Measure real progress, tracking engagement, learning and perceived financial wellbeing.
The question that really matters isn’t “How can we sell more?”, but: how can we help people understand better, so that choosing well comes naturally?
When the answer is rooted in real value for people, business results follow as a direct consequence and, above all, they last.
